19: Hulk

(Bruce Banner)

Whereas most superheroes beleive that they were given powers to protect mankind, Bruce believes that his powers are a curse rather than a blessing. For inside the innocent scientist, is a monster born from an accidental exposure to a Gamma bomb explosion. A monster that if awakened, has the potential to destroy everything its path. A monster that calls itself the Hulk.

What's fascinating about the Hulk is that since Bruce Banner cannot control his transformations, he fears of the rampaging destruction that the Hulk would unleash upon the world. Essentially he is afraid of the power he holds, as he knows that one wrong move could result in the Hulk could destroy those he cares about. Another interesting angle is how the Hulk simply wants to be left alone. Because he is continuously hunted and attacked by the military and super villains, the Hulk has developed a hatred towards humanity, and will lash out like a wild animal at anything that brings him harm. But there is no indvidual that he hates more than his own alter-ego, Dr. Bruce Banner. For the Hulk can never truly find solitude as long as Bruce attempts to contain the beast within himself. As Stan Lee put it, the Hulk is like a combination of Frankenstein's monster and Jeykll and Hyde brought together in a single entity.
